How to Change a Fuse in a UK Plug

Appliance stopped working? It might just be a blown fuse. Changing a fuse in a UK plug takes about two minutes and needs nothing more than a small flathead screwdriver.

Which fuse do you need?

UK plugs use one of three fuse sizes — 3A, 5A, or 13A. Check the rating label on the plug itself or the equipment's manual to find the right one. As a general guide:

  • 3A — lamps, small electronics, phone chargers

  • 5A — televisions, monitors

  • 13A — kettles, toasters, washing machines, most high-powered appliances

Always replace with the same rating. Fitting a higher-rated fuse than needed won't protect the appliance properly.

How to change the fuse

  1. Unplug the appliance from the wall first.

  2. Find the fuse compartment on the plug — the small rectangular slot on the face of the plug, usually marked with a line or arrow.

  3. Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently prise open the cover, or twist it anti-clockwise if it's a rotating type.

  4. The fuse sits in a small holder inside. Lever it out carefully with the screwdriver.

  5. Push the new fuse of the correct amperage into the holder until it clicks into place.

  6. Replace the cover by clicking or twisting it back into position.

  7. Plug in and test.

If it still doesn't work

Try a second new fuse first — occasionally a fuse is faulty straight out of the pack. If the appliance still doesn't work after two new fuses, the problem is with the appliance itself rather than the fuse. At that point it's worth consulting an electrician.
