How To Hang a Picture On A Wall
Today I'll share some top Picture Hanging Tips on how to hang pictures on a wall easily and safely. Picture hanging can be tricky, but these simple steps can make it a rewarding part of your home improvement.
What you need to know Before you Start
The key is to use the right fixings for your wall type. Not sure what type of wall you have? Simply tap on the wall, if it sounds solid all over it’s probably brick or blockwork, if it mostly sounds hollow it’s probably plasterboard on a wooden stud frame. Before you start drilling, make sure to check for any pipes or cables using a metal and electrical cable detector/stud detector.

What Can go Wrong?
You could drill through a pipe or an electrical cable buried in the wall. As a general rule, avoid hanging pictures above or below sockets and switches. Just in case find your water stop tap and check it turns and find your electrical box and make sure it’s new. If the stop tap doesn’t turn in either direction call a plumber to get checked out. Next, if your electrical box looks new then you should be good, if not call an electrician to check it over. Now you have the number for a plumber and electrician as a backup.
Measure and Mark
Once you're ready, hold the picture in place and mark where you want the top to go with a pencil. Measure the distance between the frame’s top and hanging point and mark it on the wall. If your picture has a wire or string, we'll show you how to measure it easily.
Drill the Hole
Now it's time to drill the hole. Make sure to wear goggles or safety glasses for drilling. We'll be using wall plugs for a brick wall, and we'll show you how to mark the length of the plug on the masonry drill bit using a piece of tape. Use a small cardboard box to catch the dust.
